I am dating myself, but one of my favorite bands of all time are The Eagles. In 1994 they had a reunion tour called Hell Freezes Over and, on that album, they had a new song called “Get Over It”. There was a line in that song that Don Henley rang out, “but the big bad world doesn’t owe you a thing, Get Over It”. The big bad world does not owe you a thing. You are entitled to nothing, but somehow people feel they deserve their just rewards. Newsflash, life is not fair and there are times justice is denied. You are entitled to nothing, so where do people get this sense of entitlement?
Part of it is the way we are socialized. If you work hard, good things will happen. But the fact of the matter is there are no guarantees. A farmer can work hard on his crops during the summer only to be wiped out by drought or a flood. Someone could be a dedicated employee working hard for the company for over ten years only to lose his job because of downsizing or corporate restructuring. You and your spouse may be out for the night and on your way home you are hit by a drunk driver killing your spouse and shattering your world.
These are all examples where fate has reared its ugly head. You had done nothing wrong but circumstances beyond your control destroyed your best efforts. It has been said that adversity does not build character, it only reveals it. So, when something goes wrong, how do you react? Do you whine and complain like a six-year-old crying that life is not fair, or do you get off your ass and do something about it? Life is about choices. What do you choose to do?
Doing something requires effort. It requires mental toughness and perseverance. In some cases, it means starting over and that can be devastating for some depending on the situation. Saying that life is not fair and then quitting is the easy way out. Throwing your hands in the air, giving up and playing the victim card hoping for some type of consolation prize because of life’s injustices is not the way to resolve your problem. When you go the extra mile, persevere and overcome the unfairness, it only makes victory that much sweeter.
Yes, life is not fair. The sooner we come to grips with that, the wiser we will be. Bad things will happen to good people but view it is a temporary setback and not a permanent outcome. If you never quit, you can never lose. Stop with the excuses. By saying life is not fair is just an excuse. Stick to your dreams, goals, plans and determination. Reveal your character to the world. That is truly more important than money or material possessions. You will succeed at the end of the day and you truly Got Over It.
Cheers,
Al
